Engelhartszell is a market town in the district of Schärding in the Austrian Innviertel region of Upper Austria.
The municipality is located in the judicial district of Schärding and is known for the Trappist monastery Engelszell located here. Engelhartszell is located in the Upper Danube Valley at an altitude of 302 m in the Innviertel region.
Culture and sights
Engelszell Abbey: The abbey was founded in 1293 as a Cistercian monastery. Today it is the only Trappist monastery in Austria.
Parish Church Engelhartszell: Late Gothic church, choir 1459, nave 1503; consecrated 1509 by Passau Bishop Urban. Baroqueized in the 18th century. Old gravestones worth seeing on the outer walls.
Filial church Stadl-Kicking
Imperial toll house: Late Gothic building with a cellar vault from the 15th century. At that time the building was located at the border of the former empire and served for the border clearance of Danube ships. Today: used as a cultural cellar for exhibitions and musical performances.
Roman fort Stanacum: remains of a Roman fort (part of the Roman limes) with four round towers in the district of Oberranna.
Plague column: erected 1510
Jochenstein power station: built from 1952 to 1956 according to plans by Roderich Fick
Water experience Minidonau: the course of the Danube can be experienced, with large aquarium and sensory garden
Schütz Art Museum - Classical Modernism: In 2020, ground was broken for the museum of art dealer Josef Schütz and his wife Irene Schütz.[5] It houses well over 600 works of classical modernism, including works by artists such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Gustav Klimt. In addition, there is an artist-in-residence program, for which three studios are available. On November 14, 2021, the Schütz Museum opened as the world's first zero-energy museum.
