Altmelon is a market town with 867 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2023) in the district of Zwettl in the Waldviertel in the northwest of Lower Austria.
Together with the municipalities of Arbesbach, Groß Gerungs, Langschlag and Rappottenstein, the market town of Altmelon is located in the so-called Waldviertler Hochland
which comprises the westernmost part of the district of Zwettl. Altmelon originated as a medieval late clearing at the beginning of the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1259 as "Mailan".
Culture and sights
Altmelon Catholic parish church (patron saint: St. James the Elder): The parish church displays a mixture of different styles. According to the first mention in 1259, the oldest parts, the presbytery
