Wels (in the Bavarian-Austrian dialect Wös, pronunciation [vø?s]) is a city in the Alpine foothills of Upper Austria.

With a population of 63,181, it is the second largest city in the province of Upper Austria after the provincial capital Linz and ranks eighth on the list of cities in Austria.

Under administrative law, Wels, like the cities of Linz and Steyr, which are also located in the central region of Upper Austria, is a city with its own statute (Statutarstadt) and thus performs the duties of the district administration itself. In addition, the district administration of Wels-Land and the district and provincial court of Wels are located here.

The city experienced two periods of prosperity during Roman times and the Middle Ages. Wels gained its current economic importance as a trade fair and industrial city as well as a transportation hub.
