With 14,681 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022), the municipality of Ternitz is the most populous and, with a total area of 65.34 km², the fifth largest municipality in terms of area in the district of Neunkirchen in Lower Austria.
Culture and sights
Stixenstein Castle: The castle, which is partially open to the public, is owned by the City of Vienna and leased to the "Association of Friends of Stixenstein Castle". The building is used for theater performances, concerts and exhibitions and can also be rented for private parties. The former large storage building in the outer castle is used by the Forestry Administration of the City of Vienna for economic purposes.
Ruin Dunkelstein: is a castle of the 11th century on the Petersberg which was excavated and scientifically examined by archaeologists of the University of Vienna in the 1990s. The excavation site was transformed into an archaeological park after the investigations were completed. Information boards inform visitors comprehensively about the results of the excavations.
Stadtpfarrkirche Ternitz: This listed Sacred Heart Church on Theodor-Körner-Platz was built in 1959 according to plans by architect Josef Vytiska. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the town hall, a multi-purpose hall in reinforced concrete construction with wooden trusses and aluminum roof (designed by Roland Rainer).
Parish Church of St. Johann am Steinfeld: In St. Johann am Steinfelde on a slope on the northern edge of the village surrounded by a cemetery. The late Romanesque nave was vaulted in late Gothic style at the beginning of the 16th century. The early Gothic rectangular choir from the third quarter of the 13th century was extended to a tower in the 15th century. The wooden ridge turret with an onion helmet dates back to the 18th century. On the southern wall of the tower there is a monumental mural painting. Inside, remarkable Gothic wall paintings from different phases have been uncovered. The interior is predominantly in the Baroque style.[12]

Steel City Museum: The Steel City Museum Ternitz was opened on September 28, 2001 on the site of Ternitz's first post office. Both the museum's volunteer members and numerous private collectors contribute to the goal of keeping history alive. Various special exhibitions show the historical Ternitz and its districts.
The nature park Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand lies with about half of its area in the European protected areas Northeastern Marginal Alps. With the decree of the government of Lower Austria about the landscape protection areas of 31 January 2006 [13] the Nature Park Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand is designated as a protection zone.
