Schladming is a municipality in the area of the Expositur Gröbming, district Liezen in Styria (judicial district Schladming). It is the largest municipality in the Gröbming Expository with 6,538 inhabitants and the second largest town in the district. Schladming, an important winter sports resort, hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1982 and 2013 and the Special Olympics in the winters of 1993 and 2017. Schladming is located in northwestern Upper Styria in the upper Enns Valley at the confluence of the Talbach and Enns rivers. The town is framed by the Dachstein to the north and the Niedere Tauern to the south. The city borders the province of Salzburg to the west.
Culture and sights
Town fortification: preserved are wall remains from 1629, a town gate, the Salzburg Gate, and one of four round towers
City Museum: in a building from 1661, which originally served to house sick miners and survivors of injured miners. The museum mainly displays exhibits on the mining past and the peasant wars of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
Town hall: built in 1884 by August Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as a hunting lodge
Catholic parish church of Schladming St. Achaz: in its core late Romanesque, 1522 to 1532 extended to the late Gothic three-nave, five-bay hall church, Baroque high altar from 1702 to 1704
Protestant parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul: built between 1859 and 1862, tower already erected in 1852, Renaissance winged altar in the side aisle from the Reformation period (around 1570)
In the provincial floral decoration competition Flora|19, Schladming was one of seven Styrian towns to receive a total of five Floras, making it one of the winners in the province.
Regular events
Mid Kultur: the music festival Mid Kultur has been offering concerts and master classes in July and August since 1977 - formerly under the name "Schladminger Musiksommer". New since 1998 is Mid Europe, which offers stylistically diverse wind music. For three years there has also been the "Pre Mid". Here, folk instruments such as alpine and root horns, bagpipes and others are presented.
