Welcome to the smallest city in Austria
Hardegg is a municipality with 1304 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in the district of Hollabrunn in Lower Austria. The area around Hardegg belongs scenically to the Waldviertel and as part of the district Hollabrunn belongs to the Weinviertel. To the north, Hardegg borders the Czech Republic with the river Thaya. The town of Hardegg itself - without the incorporated villages - has only 86 inhabitants as of January 1, 2022 and thus counts as the smallest town in Austria.
Hardegg, the smallest town in Austria, is situated in the deep, winding valley of the Thaya River, in the middle of extensive forests. The mighty knight's castle with four towers towers above the town on a high rocky ridge.
The beautiful area, the good air and the quiet location offer you opportunities for recreation that are rarely found elsewhere. Cycling, Nordic Walking or simply hiking in the National Park Thayatal.
Documentarily mentioned for the first time in 1290 as a town, the place developed as a typical castle settlement in the 11th and 12th century, from which the name (Old High German word "hard" = forest, "-egg" = rock, stone) is derived. In a figurative sense a "hard house with forest".
The National Park Thayatal together with the Czech Národní park Podyjí guarantees the protection of one of the most beautiful, romantic and species-rich valley landscapes. Hardly anywhere else is there a comparable diversity of plants and animals in such a small area as here on the Thaya. Nature has absolute priority; visitors are invited to see, marvel and relax. Take your time to get to know and understand the most beautiful side of nature. Naturally in the National Park Thayatal.
