The Weinviertel, located in the northeastern part of Lower Austria, is also known in many places as the "quarter under the Manhartsberg". With an area of 4,200 km², it is one of the four geographical quarters of Lower Austria. The borders of the Weinviertel run in the east along the state border from Austria to Slovakia, which is formed by the Morava River.
In the north, the Weinviertel borders the Czech Republic, where the Thaya River forms the border. The Manhartsberg represents the border with the Waldviertel in the west. In the south, the Weinviertel borders on the province of Vienna as well as on the Mostviertel and the Industrieviertel, here the border is formed by the Danube. The districts of Mistelbach, Gänserndorf, Korneuburg, Hollabrunn as well as the judicial district Kirchberg am Wagram of the district Tulln and parts of the
districts of Horn and Krems belong to the Weinviertel.
The name is given to the wine. Our Weinviertel (2)
The Weinviertel is characterized by wine, both in terms of landscape and agricultural production. If you drive through the Weinviertel, you will discover it in many places. With 13,800 hectares, the Weinviertel is Austria's largest wine-growing region. Vineyards and grapevines characterize the gently rolling landscape northeast of Vienna, as do the picturesque cellar lanes.
A diverse landscape
Our Weinviertel (3)
The Weinviertel is a landscape that could not be more diverse. The highest elevation is the Buschberg with 491m. Gentle hills rise across the region and border the plains of the Marchfeld in the south and along the Danube. A special significance for the Weinviertel has the loess - a glacial dust, which was carried by west winds from the bare gravel fields of the Alpine foothills into the Weinviertel. It deposited in the lowlands and on the slopes and formed the basis for the digging of cellar tubes as well as the highly diverse agriculture and viticulture.
Cellar lanes: Villages without chimneys
Our Weinviertel (4)A unique feature of the Weinviertel are the Kellergassen. They are considered a special cultural and historical feature and have characterized the Weinviertel for about 200 years. The wine cellars in the Kellergassen were once used as production and storage facilities. Today, the wine is pressed in the wineries themselves, but in many places the Kellergassen are maintained and brought back to life on special occasions.
Hotly contested cultural land
The cultural history of the Weinviertel goes back more than 25,000 years. The favorable climatic conditions as well as the fertile loess soil brought about the settlement of the first inhabitants of the Weinviertel already a little later. The circular ditches, which are known in many places, date from this time. The Bronze Age left the Weinviertel some "Mugeln" - burial mounds of rich people.
