Bad Leonfelden is an Upper Austrian municipality in the Upper Mühlviertel in the district Urfahr-Umgebung. With an area of 40.33 km² and 4297 inhabitants, Bad Leonfelden is the fourth largest municipality in the district in terms of area and the ninth largest in terms of population.
Bad Leonfelden was first mentioned in a document in 1154 as Lobenwelt and received market rights before 1356. Leonfelden, with its fortifications erected after the Hussite Wars, was one of four border fortifications against the Bohemians in today's Mühlviertel. The location on two trade routes leading from the Danube to Bohemia brought prosperity to the citizens, although the trading activity was opposed by the Freistädtern both militarily and judicially. The market became the seat of a district court in 1850, the center of the judicial district of Leonfelden, and in 1903 was incorporated into the newly formed district of Urfahr.
A moor bath already existed in Leonfelden between 1881 and 1919. In the 1960s, a spa house was opened and the health resort has been allowed to call itself Bad Leonfelden since then. Since the 1970s, Leonfelden has been developed into the school town of the central Mühlviertel and in 2001 was elevated to the status of a town by the Upper Austrian provincial government.
