Bad Großpertholz is a market town in the district of Gmünd in Lower Austria. 
Bad Großpertholz is located in the Freiwald, in the north-western Waldviertel on the border between the Czech Republic and Austria.
The 526-hectare Nordwald Großpertholz Nature Park was founded in 1987. It offers a showroom about the life 
of the woodworkers, hiking opportunities in the high moor and themed trails.

Großpertholz was founded in the middle of the 12th century by Berthold von Schiefern-Arnstein, who built a fortified house to protect the settlement.

Culture and sights

Catholic parish church of Bad Großpertholz St. Bartholomew and St. Thomas: This is a baroque hall church with Romanesque origins.
On the main square below the church is a Trinity Column dating from 1715.
Großpertholz Castle in the east of the village is a baroque building whose exterior design is characterized by 19th century alterations. 
The castle houses a chapel dedicated to St. Sebastian and St. Florian.
Above the castle is the neo-Gothic Hackelberg crypt chapel.
The late Baroque Karlstift parish church was built between 1772 and 1775.
Karlstift is also home to a manor house built in 1828 by the Barons of Hackelberg-Landau from Großpertholz, 
the Trinity Chapel on Eichelberg, built in 1906, and a boundary pillar on Schanzberg.
