Schattwald is a municipality in the district of Reutte in Tyrol (Austria) and the last or westernmost village in the Tannheim Valley, through which the Vils River flows. It is located east of the Oberjochpass leading to Bad Hindelang (Bavaria), so it is slightly east of the border with Germany.
Culture and sights
In 1846, the artist Anton Falger, who came from Elbigenalp in the Lech Valley, also created a dance of death for Schattwald, which originally hung in the vestibule of the Gothic predecessor building of today's church of St. Wolfgang and today has found its place on the south wall of the new church. The small-format pictures (20 × 16 cm) painted on twelve wooden panels are grouped in two rows in a large frame. They are not signed, the picture of the soldier is dated 1846. The arrangement of the pictures probably no longer corresponds to the artist's intentions; they now follow one another: child, boy, soldier, bishop, virgin, burgher, peasant, monarch, beggar woman, craftsman, mother, grandmother.
