Weißensee is a municipality in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia, in Austria. Founded in 1850, the municipality was called Techendorf until 1968 and is located on the shores of Lake Weissensee at the foot of the Gailtal Alps. The village has 192 accommodation establishments forms a station on the European long-distance hiking trail E10 as well as on the Rupertiweg and belongs to the tourist cooperation Alpine Pearls founded in 2006.
Culture and sights
The Protestant Church Techendorf is a building built in 1900 to 1903 in neo-Gothic style, modeled after the church in Weißbriach.
The Catholic Filialkirche St. Martin in Gatschach, first mentioned in a document in 1485, is a low building, originally late Gothic, baroqueized in the 17th century.
From Naggl/Paterzipf (boat station/parking lot), the former glassblowing village of Tscherniheim can be reached on foot in about 75 minutes. The Bodental is also passable by mountain bikes. Along the route there are six information boards on the theme trail "On the trail of forest glass".
In 1986, the ice skating scenes from the Bond film "A Touch of Death" were filmed at Lake Weissensee.
