Fohnsdorf is a municipality located in the Murtal district of the Austrian state of Styria. The municipality belongs to the judicial district of Judenburg and is located on the northern border of the Aichfeld. Fohnsdorf consists of eight cadastral communities and ten counting districts. In 1114, the village was first mentioned in a document as "Fanestorf" and later became known for lignite mining, the Wodzicki shaft was the deepest lignite mining in the world with tunnels to a depth of almost 1200 meters.
