Lake Faak is located south of Villach and the Drava River and north of the Mittagskogel mountain in the Karawanken mountains. Politically, Lake Faak belongs to the municipalities of Villach (with the villages of Drobollach am Faaker See and Egg am Faaker See to the north) and Finkenstein (with the village of Faak am See to the southwest).

The villages around Lake Faak offer domiciles frequented mainly by individual tourists and a varied tourist infrastructure with hotels, guest houses, pensions, vacation apartments and camping sites. There are numerous restaurants and inns, cafes, pubs and wine taverns. A number of events take place, the most frequented event is the European Bike Week (formerly Harley meeting), which takes place in the first week of September. The days before the GTI meeting, the region around Lake Faak is fully booked.
